PAUL MORLEY
Paul Morley is a British ceramic artist whose practice centres on hand-built, slab-constructed ceramic sculpture. Working primarily with crank clay fired to earthenware, Morley uses underglazes and glazes to develop bold, graphic surfaces and sculptural forms.
His work is developed from small 2D abstract collages and paintings, which he translates instinctively into three-dimensional forms without predetermined solutions. The resulting sculptures explore the interchange between 2D and 3D abstraction and often have a distinctive semi-architectural character.
Morley’s work is informed by Constructivism, Brutalism and Futurism, alongside geometric art, Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. His interest in industrial structures developed through his earlier career as a land surveyor, during which he encountered abandoned factories, industrial sites and concrete structures. Soviet bus stops, lido diving platforms and pylons have also informed his sculptural language.

A hand-built ceramic lamp base by ceramic artist Paul Morley, constructed from slabs of Earthstone textured crank clay and fired to earthenware. The bold, Brutalist-inspired form features an asymmetric, angular silhouette, functioning as both a sculptural object and practical lamp base. Finished in vibrant orange using layered underglazes that have been scraped back, with a thin transparent gloss glaze applied over the surface. The process reveals deeper undertones and areas of raw underglaze, while the brushwork creates a textured finish across the flat surfaces, allowing the natural texture of the clay to show through. Newly wired with black fabric flex and a UK plug. PAT tested.
