ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ray Barry was a Cornwall-based artist with a lifelong passion for painting. Beginning his artistic journey in the 1950s while working for Cable and Wireless in Sudan, he exhibited early at the Red Sea Club, Port Sudan, and The New Stanley Gallery, Nairobi.

After settling in Cornwall, Barry developed his distinctive style, winning top prize at the 3 Spires Arts Festival, Truro, and holding solo exhibitions at Falmouth Arts Club, Penzance Arts Club, The Crypt Gallery St Ives, The Cornerstone Gallery St Ives, and Bakehouse Gallery St Ives. He also exhibited alongside artists such as Jenny Woodhouse, Bob Devereux, Rachel Kantaris, and Victor Bramley.

A Director of the St Ives Society of Artists (appointed 2010) and an Associate of both the Newlyn and Penwith Society of Artists, Barry graduated from Falmouth School of Art in 1997 and maintained a studio first in St Ives, later relocating to Ludgvan. He was highly regarded among his peers, with a close connection to Bryan Pearce.

Working primarily in oils and acrylics, Barry explored colour and texture with passion, describing his approach: “I enjoy creating order out of chaos and conversely 'deconstructing' order to the point of meaningful abstraction….I paint with a sense of adventure rather than premeditation…I love the poetics of Abstraction.”
