ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sandy Brown has been working in ceramics for over 50 years and is internationally recognised for her distinctive, expressive approach to clay. Her introduction to ceramics in Japan had a lasting influence, shaping a belief that pots can be dynamic, spontaneous, irregular, and full of energy – qualities that invite both use and appreciation.
Each piece is entirely unique and non-repeatable, created through an intuitive, instinct-led process with no fixed plans or preliminary sketches. Working with sgraffito, coloured glazes, and oxides applied using brushes and slip trailers of varying sizes, Sandy builds surface decoration as a direct response to the evolving work itself. Each piece flows into the next, forming a continuous visual language rooted in spontaneity and experimentation.
